Resume Tip #1: Use Titles and Headings:
Categorize the information on your resume with relevant
titles and headings.
Resume Tip #2: Organize the Information on Your Resume
to Draw Attention to Your Strengths:
Clearly
organize the information on your resume. Most
prospective employers won’t take the time to read your
resume carefully. They will only scan through it and
stop if they see something that catches their attention.
Resume Tip #3: Choose the Right Font:
Choose a
font that is easy to read. The most widely used fonts
are Times New Roman and Arial. The Times New Roman font
is most often used in less technical fields such as law
whereas the Arial font is used in more technical fields
such as computer science.
Resume Tip #4: Choose the Right Font Size:
Once
again, it’s all about making it easy for the reader.
The font size for the main content of your resume should
be between 10 and 12 (size 11 strikes a good balance).
Your resume may look better with a smaller font, but at
the end of the day, what matters is the content.
Clarity primes.
Resume Tip #5: Make Your Resume Visually Appealing:
Balance
the content of your resume so that it is well spread out
on the page. For instance, you don’t want the top of
the page to look too empty and the bottom to look too
full. Try playing with the margins if you need space.
Resume Tip #6: Use a Laser Printer to Print Your Resume:
Avoid
using inkjets to print your resume. Your resume will
look more professional if it is laser-printed.
Resume Tip #7: Do Not Staple Your Resume:
If your
resume is over one page, do not staple the pages
together. Oftentimes, the decision to hire a candidate
or invite a candidate for interview is made by a hiring
committee. A copy of your resume will probably have to
be provided to each member of the committee (meaning
that if you staple your resume, they will probably have
to unstaple it anyways in order to make photocopies).
Resume Tip #8: Number the Pages of Your Resume:
Remember
to number the pages of your resume when it has more than
one page.
Resume Tip #9: Don’t Fold a Resume Along a Text Line:
If
possible, send your application in a 9”x12” envelope to
avoid having to fold your resume or cover letter. If
you decide to send your application in a smaller
envelope, remember not to fold your documents along a
line of text. |
